'Awareness on Lupus low among people, doctors' - The New Indian Express

Awareness levels about Lupus disease is very low among people. Symptoms like fatigue, rashes, headache, mouth ulcers, joint pain and hair loss are often neglected. As a result, treating this condition has become more complicated, say rheumatologists.

Former president of Indian Rheumatology Association, Dr K M Mahendranath, told Express, "Lupus, which mostly affects women, can affect any part of the body and has no cure. But, with early detection and timely medical intervention, it can be controlled and their life span extended".

When a person is diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), commonly called Lupus, their life span was expected to be only up to five years in 1990. But, with early detection and medicines, now the life span can be stretched up to 25 years, he said. The awareness among doctors is not satisfactory in the state and in Bangalore, we have the (Lupus) department only in one or two private hospitals," Dr Mahendranath said.

Sagar Apollo Hospital's rheumatologist Dr Anupama Kumari said patients will have to develop a positive attitude. Terming this condition as not rare, she said, "Out of 1 lakh people, 400 will have this syndrome and hereditary factors can also play a role. This disease is more common among women."
